Granlibakken Sledding is located at North Lake Tahoe, one mile south of Tahoe City. The broad, machine-groomed sliding hill is open to adults and children riding saucers provided by the resort with purchase of a ticket.
A second, smaller hill is a better choice for younger children. For both slopes, guests have to walk up to the top of the hill. Granlibakken's shaded, north-facing mountainside, coupled with snow making machines, means that the sliding hill often has good snow when other lake level sliding hills are barren. After each 90-minute session the resort will "Zamboni" the hill to provide a smooth surface for the next session.
At the bottom of the hill is a warming hut with a deck where guests can sit and watch the sliders coming down the hill. Beginner and intermediate ski runs are located next to the sliding hill.
Saturday Night Sledding is offered from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. The after-dark sledding session includes music, laser lights, and glowsticks. Granlibakken's Food Truck will be available nearby with hot drinks.
Granlibakken began about a century ago as a speedy toboggan and ski jump hill where thrill seekers gathered to challenge the limits of their sports. In the 1940s Norwegian ski jumper Kjell Rusty Rustad leased the valley and began to add amenities that would become Granlibakken, or "hill sheltered by trees."
Today the wooded, 74-acre resort includes a main lodge, several conference rooms, restaurants, a variety of lodging choices, and numerous activity venues from swimming and a treetop ropes course to skiing and sledding.
