Choosing the right clothing for playing in the snow can make the difference between an enjoyable day or one spent wet and cold. For children or adults, the choices are similar.
Hats should be warm and comfortable. Knit hats serve both needs. Long scarves can be nice on bitter cold days, but for they can be a hindrance for active children. A loose-fitting neck scarf does the trick.
Gloves with fingers offer good dexterity, but mittens are warmer. For children sledding, mixing it up in a snowball fight, or making snowmen, mittens are a good choice. Gloves or mittens, choose a waterproof brand to keep hands dry and warm.
Once again, waterproof or water-resistant snow pants or bibs will keep children warm and dry. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Insulation is a big plus.
Above all, choose boots that fit snuggly around the ankle to keep snow out. Old-fashion, open-top rain boots just lead to wet, cold feet. Some models have elastic around the top, others have convenient draw strings.
On sunny days exposure to the sun's UV rays reflecting off the snow can lead to painful snow blindness, a burning or gritty sensation in the eyes. Although it is usually temporary and often goes away in a day or two, it is much better to avoid it with eye protection - goggles or sun glasses. You can find them in a wide variety of colors and styles.
Most winter coats will work just fine in the snow. Detachable hoods are nice. Parkas are available in a variety of colors.
